Make a plastic jellyfish

Plastic is extremely dangerous for animals, and plastic bags left lying around in the environment can be particularly harmful to sea turtles. Do you know why?

Plastic is light and transparent, and when it floats in the sea, it looks just like a jellyfish. Don’t believe us? Try making a plastic jellyfish with us. You’ll see just how easily a poor turtle can be tricked.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

– Plastic bags

– Water

– A basin

HOW TO DO IT:

1. Take the bag for the base and tie a knot in it. This will be the jellyfish’s head.

2. Tear the handles to create the illusion of tentacles.

3. Once you’ve filled the basin with water, dip your ‘jellyfish’ in.

4. Stir the water with your hands to create movement.

5. Watch how the plastic bags move in the water: don’t they look just like jellyfish being carried along by the current?

We talked to the children at the library in Pontecurone (AL) about the damage caused by plastic in turtles’ natural habitats whilst reading Cucù racconta: La tartaruga marina. Discover this lovely and informative story for yourself!
