Who better to tell us about the world of I Variopinti<\/a> than its author and illustrator? In this double interview, we\u2019ll discover together all the interesting facts and secrets of this mysterious and special family.<\/strong><\/p>

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

Hi Vuokko! You\u2019re the author of this novel, which in Finland is part of a series featuring various protagonists. How did you come up with the idea for I Variopinti<\/em> series?<\/strong><\/p>

(V.)<\/strong> The idea for the book series was the result of a long period of reflection that began while I was still writing my previous children\u2019s novel series, Rotation<\/em>. In that series, I wanted to explore family relationships, their intimacy, complexity and warmth. In the V\u00e4rikk\u00e4\u00e4t<\/em> (original title for I Variopinti) series, I decided to combine that familiar portrayal of family life from Rotation<\/em> with another theme that speaks to me personally: colors. I had worked as a children\u2019s art educator, so the theme of color felt like a natural fit for me as a writer. From the very beginning, I envisioned the series made up of books, each representing a different color. The supernatural dimension became part of it quite naturally.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

Reeta, you, on the other hand, are the illustrator of this series. Could you explain your creative process when you\u2019re commissioned to illustrate a book?<\/strong><\/p>

(R.)<\/strong> The character design along with everything else comes directly from the script: what kind of person this is, how she talks and acts and how this person is described in the text. For me it\u2019s quite intuitive process. For example In my mind Tiuku (Rubina\u2019s name in the original version) looks just like this and nothing else. I do sometimes borrow features from people in real life, if I get a feeling that there is a resemblance between a character and someone I know.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

What do you think of I Variopinti<\/em>? What sort of connection have you formed with this series?<\/strong><\/p>

(R.)<\/strong> Back then the publisher S&S was looking for a new illustrator for a children\u2019s book series. I got the script of V\u00e4rikk\u00e4\u00e4t to read through and I knew right away that this was a book I would love to illustrate. I had always wanted to illustrate a fantasy novel. The story was delightful mix of real world and magic. I loved the main character Tiuku. I made some sketches for the characters and was happy to be chosen for the job. I also loved the idea that each book would have different main character and have different colour theme according to a character. Also the illustrations would have only one additional colour alongside black (in the first book red, the second book blue and so on), so there was something new and different for each book. It was wonderful to witness how the characters developed through the series and I grow very fond of them. It was quite sad to say good bye to them in the final book.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

Vuokko, in the first book, each character possesses the extraordinary power to mentally control all objects of a certain colour: how did you assign each colour to the characters? Does it have anything to do with their personalities? <\/strong><\/p>

(V.)<\/strong> I remember that I spent quite a long time building the characters and developing their colors. In the story, I wanted to portray many different kinds of children and adults and to break stereotypes in a suitable way. As the book series progresses, the characters\u2019 colors increase as they learn new things about themselves. By the end of the story, for example, a calm blue girl is no longer just a calm blue girl, but much more than that. When creating the characters, I made use of the associations evoked by colors as well as their cultural meanings. The colors also defined the characters\u2019 personalities and outward appearance. Building the characters was incredibly fun, because the given framework fueled the creative process.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

Reeta, as an artist, do you agree with the connections identified by the author? Or do those colours have a different meaning for you?<\/strong><\/p>

(R.)<\/strong> It was fun to illustrate different characters with different colours and personality types that comes with it. It was something extra to play with. When the series go on the characters develop and are no longer just one thing.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

Vuokko, are the names of the main characters also linked to the colours and powers they possess?<\/strong><\/p>

(V.)<\/strong> I thought about the characters\u2019 names for a long time and bounced ideas around with friends and family. What kinds of names might suit red, green, or blue girls or boys? People were happy to share their feelings about the associations different names evoked. In the end, I chose the name Tiuku, which in Finnish refers to a small jingle bell. She is the Christmas girl. It\u2019s also a name that suits both girls and boys. Her sister Meri (Marina in the Italian edition), in turn, means \u201csea.\u201d \u201cIn the translation, the names have been changed. Perhaps the translator, or you there at the publishing house, had same fun coming up with them!<\/p>

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

The relationship between children and their relatives (especially their parents) is a sensitive subject, and you chose to tackle it in the first book in an original way. Can you tell us about this choice?<\/strong><\/p>

(R.) Writing about imperfectly perfect families has always felt natural to me. In many children\u2019s books, the children are orphans or the adults have otherwise been pushed into the background. I have wanted to write books that portray family relationships and their immense importance to children. I remember how, even as a child, I was bothered that Pippi Longstocking didn\u2019t have a mother, or that journeys were made to Narnia or Nangijala without parents. In the books where parents or other close adults were portrayed, there was a stronger sense of security and realism. This was true even when the adults depicted were imperfect, such as Mattis, the father in Ronia the Robber’s Daughter. I see no reason, then, to leave children\u2019s family relationships unportrayed in my own books. Only in some of my picture books or easy-to-read children\u2019s novels have I occasionally made that choice.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

In the Variopinti universe, what would your colour be? <\/strong><\/p>

(V.)<\/strong> I would probably be a calm blue, with a small amount of yellow joy and brightness mixed in.<\/p>

(R.)<\/strong> In the V\u00e4rikk\u00e4\u00e4t<\/em> universe my colour would be blue with some splash of mysterious purple.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

How did you develop the main character, Rubina, in terms of both her personality and the illustrations? We were impressed by the character\u2019s gender-neutral traits, which we believe make it easier for readers of all genders to identify with her. Was this a deliberate choice?<\/strong><\/p>

(V.)<\/strong> I shaped Tiukku\u2019s personality as \u2018red\u2019. She\u2019s bold, fiery-tempered, and loves with burning intensity. Choosing the short hair for Tiuku was a conscious decision for me. In my previous series, there was a boy with long hair, Jaan. In V\u00e4rikk\u00e4\u00e4t<\/em>, I then wrote a short-haired girl. I also remember being delighted by Reetta\u2019s Tiuku. In the first version of the manuscript that Reetta read, Tiuku was, if I remember correctly, described as \u201cshort-haired and red-eyed.\u201d However, it was Reetta who dared to make the character meaningfully androgynous. I loved Tiuku\u2019s appearance the moment I saw it.<\/p>

(R.)<\/strong> Tiuku\u2019s special power is red, so she is fearless, active and a bit restless. She was described as short haired. In my mind she was immediately tomboyish and gender neutral. I always thought this was Vuokko\u2019s intention as well! But it\u2019s not written directly in the text and I think it\u2019s good that the readers can make their own interpretations. I have heard that some readers have read the book thinking Tiuku is a boy.<\/p>
